The Power of Personal Brand in Talent Development

Andy Storch recently released a solo episode of the Talent Development Hot Seat Podcast focused on a topic that is becoming increasingly vital for professionals at every stage: personal brand. Andy, host, consultant, keynote speaker, and now co-author of Own Your Brand, Own Your Career, makes the case for tackling your reputation with authenticity, intention, and a dash of creative flair.

Here are key takeaways you can put into practice today to shape how others see you both at work and beyond.

Start With This Question: What Do You Want to Be Known For?
Andy opens the episode with a powerful reflection: What are you known for, and more importantly, what do you want to be known for? Personal brand is more than just a list of technical skills or job duties. It is the way people talk about you when you are not in the room, the full constellation of your reputation, strengths, passions, quirks, and yes, even your flaws.

Take time to audit your own image: What unique value do you bring? Are you known as a connector, a problem-solver, a creative contributor, or maybe the person who always brings positive energy to Zoom calls? Pinpointing these can help you guide and elevate your brand rather than leaving it to chance.

Do Not Forget the Personal Side
Professional credibility is important, but sharing authentic glimpses of your broader life, such as hobbies, family roles, or community involvement, makes you memorable and relatable. Andy illustrates this with stories about his love for cycling. He keeps his bike in his office, sometimes visible on video calls, making it an organic conversation starter. He also shares updates about his family, his experiences battling cancer, and other personal milestones, adding depth to what he is known for at work.

Think about the signals you give, consciously or not. What does your workspace say about you? What stories do your posts and conversations convey?

Every Interaction Shapes Your Brand
Andy reminds listeners that our reputations are formed in the tiny details: punctuality, follow-up, communication style, and how you make people feel in meetings. Colleagues are always making micro-judgments, and every touchpoint is a chance to reinforce or reshape how you are perceived.

Run a quick exercise: List colleagues you admire and those you find challenging. What makes the difference? Most likely, it comes down to reliability, helpfulness, positivity, or collaboration. Notice these patterns and ask yourself: Are you demonstrating the attributes you respect in others?

Be Authentic but Be Intentional
Intentionality is at the core of Andy’s message. He is not advocating for inauthentic self-promotion, but for taking ownership of your narrative. When you know what you want to be known for, you can make consistent choices that reinforce that image in meetings, on LinkedIn, and in hallway conversations.

This is also a key theme of Andy's new book, co-authored with Mike Kim, which offers stories, case studies, and practical exercises to help you build your brand both inside and outside your organization.

The Ripple Effect: Brand-Building for Teams and Organizations
Your team or function has a brand too. Is HR seen as a cost center or as strategic partners? Is your learning and development group thought of as order-takers or innovation drivers? Andy encourages teams to intentionally cultivate a shared reputation by highlighting wins, telling stories, and amplifying internal thought leadership.

He also urges leaders to embrace their own brand by showing employees what authenticity and connection look like. The more real you are, the more you foster trust and psychological safety.

Maximize LinkedIn and Keep It Human
Andy notes that most employees and candidates care more about leaders’ and employees’ stories than they do about formal corporate posts. When individual staff members share personal insights, success stories, or learning journeys, it is more compelling than anything a brand account can deliver.

If you are hesitant about posting, start by getting your profile up to date, sharing a win, or commenting thoughtfully on someone else’s post. Building equity on LinkedIn is not about going viral, it is about being visible, approachable, and real.

Blend the Professional and the Personal
Some professionals are private by nature, and that is okay. You do not need to share everything to create a standout brand. But giving colleagues and leaders a window into your world, whether it is through sharing a hobby, family story, or personal win, can make you more approachable and spark valuable conversations.

Andy recalls a contact whose brand includes being an AI thought leader and a wine enthusiast, two seemingly unrelated details that make him memorable and inspire easy conversation.

Bringing It All Together: Your Brand Is a Journey
Creating a compelling personal brand is not about perfection. It is about being seen, trusted, and known for the things that matter. As Andy says, “Everything we do builds our personal brand.” So ask yourself: What can you do today to take ownership of your brand? What stories can you share, and how can you connect more authentically with those around you?

This episode reminds us that we all have a brand, either by default or by design. Make it work for you.
