How to Gain Influence with Strategic Storytelling with Michele Moreno

"So whenever I get super nervous, I deep breathe, I say, focus on the audience, and I give my mantra, and it triggers all of the background, all of the accomplishments that have led me to that moment."

I had the pleasure of speaking with Michele Moreno, actress turned communication strategist, about the power of strategic storytelling in corporate settings.

Here's how you can gain influence using Michele's expert techniques:

Understand Your Audience:

Before crafting your story, know who you're speaking to. Michele emphasizes understanding audience needs to select the most impactful data points and details.

Balance Data and Narrative:

Combine hard data with narrative for persuasive communication. Pick one or two compelling data points, as advised by Michele, and weave them into your story to effectively convey your message.

Create a Mantra:

To gain confidence, develop a personal mantra. Michele suggests using this technique to turn nerves into an advantage, transforming stress into a driving force.

Employ Visualization:

Use guided visualizations to enhance your presentation skills. Michele and Andy Storch both advocate for this method to prepare mentally for impactful storytelling.

Follow a Framework:

Michele offers a 1-minute business story framework. Start with a problem, narrate the approach to tackle it, and showcase the results with data. This structure ensures clarity and compels the audience.

Make Nerves Your Ally:

Shift your focus from your fears to serving your audience. By following advice from a TED talk by Kelly McGonagall mentioned by Michele, you can make nerves work in your favor.

Use Storytelling for Buy-In:

Good stories can lead to stakeholder support for talent development programs. Michele shared a success story of a company that reduced training time by 40% and increased satisfaction ratings using strategic stories.

Learn and Practice:

Michele urges everyone to develop skills such as critical thinking and communication for future success. Her mantra is to keep learning and practicing, using resources like Kelly McGonagall's work and other TED talks.
